Derek is Professor of Agronomy and Agroecology at Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture (DAL-AC). Derek teaches on soil management and organic field crop management at the undergraduate and graduate level at DAL-AC. From 2005-2015 he held the position as Canada Research Chair in Organic Agriculture. He has worked with many organic farms and producer groups across Eastern Canada to tackle both production challenges and assess the ecological and environmental footprint of these systems. This included organic field crop (potatoes, grains, forages), organic dairying, and organic blueberry production. Current research projects in Atlantic Canada and Quebec focus on farming system impact on soil carbon, soil health and soil microbial
dynamics. Derek has published over 70 scientific papers and book chapters based on his research. In 2014-15 he was president of the Canadian Society of Agronomy.
